Get Your Children On Board With Better Dental Habits

Good dental habits are essential for children to develop and maintain healthy teeth, gums, and overall oral health. Unfortunately, getting kids excited about practicing good oral hygiene can be a challenge. The good news is that there are plenty of ways to get your kids interested in taking care of their teeth, including making it a fun and rewarding experience.

In this blog post, we'll explore how to get your children on board with good dental habits and foster a lifelong commitment to oral health.

Educate Them About Teeth
Teaching children about their teeth is an excellent way to encourage them to maintain good oral health. After all, the habits that kids learn at a young age can make all the difference in forming long-lasting positive behaviors for life. Educate them about the different types of teeth - four cuspids, eight incisors, twelve molars, and eight premolars - and why each serves a unique purpose. It's also beneficial to let them get involved in the process by allowing them to choose their own toothbrush, so they can enjoy experimenting while making brushing more fun! The more knowledge they have now, the more likely they are to prioritize proper care and keep their smile bright forever.

Reward Them!
To encourage a lifetime of healthy teeth for little ones, many parents use rewards to incentivize their children to practice better dental hygiene. Need some examples of how you can try this at home? Create a chart and stick it on the bathroom wall. Give your child a star or sticker every time they brush and floss their teeth. After a series of stars, reward them with something small such as a puzzle, coloring book, or a new toothbrush! For things like brushing and flossing consistently for an entire month, surprise them with bigger prizes like dinner at their favorite restaurant or tickets to the movie theater - even though it may cost more upfront, it'll pay off in the long run!

Make it enjoyable through storytime or play.
Get creative when it comes to encouraging your child to brush their teeth by transforming it into a fun game. For example, you can hide their toothbrush somewhere in the house and watch them go on an exciting hunt for it. If there's more than one child at home, you can even challenge each other and race to see who gets to the bathroom first. Furthermore, why not make brushing time an enjoyable activity? You could come up with a silly story starring their toothbrush as the main character - give them an adorable name, too!

Take A Seat.
If you find it challenging to get your child to stand still for a whole two minutes to brush their teeth, have them take a seat. Sitting down will help your child stay still and focus on brushing their teeth. There’s no rule that says you have to brush your teeth in the bathroom, so bring your child to the couch or bed to sit on while they brush their teeth. If you can get your kids to sit still and brush their teeth for the correct length of time when they are young, then they will be more likely to continue this good dental health habit in the future.

Choosing The Right Brush
Forget the ordinary, mundane toothbrushes - pick up a novelty option that kids will love! Whether it's one with a timer, that lights up, or has their favorite character on it, they'll be motivated to brush more often and this can help create good oral hygiene habits for the future. Not only is this one of the best investments you can make but it's also sure to put a smile on their face. Want to make sure you choose the right brush for your child?
