Apart from the frequency of your brushing, the duration of each brushing period is also a crucial part of your oral health. Each time you brush it should last somewhere between two to three minutes. This is the ideal time needed to remove plaque and bacteria that is trapped in your mouth. Also important to remember is to allocate your two or three minutes to each section of your mouth properly. An easy way to remember this is to divide your mouth into four different sections and then spend at least 30 seconds brushing in each area. You can divide the sections into the top left, top right, bottom left, and bottom right.
Another way you can increase the efficiency of your brushing session is to keep your motions soft and gentle. Many people tend to brush too hard which can cause a breakdown in your teeth’s enamel and end up exposing your teeth to more air and food that can cause cavities.
A lot of people also use the wrong technique when brushing which leads to decreased oral health. To avoid this slip up, make sure you are holding your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle and brush in circular motions instead of going vertically and horizontally. With your circular motions, brush the inner and outer parts of your teeth and gum line and be sure not to ignore your tongue! Be sure to rinse your mouth after brushing to remove any left over toothpaste and get rid of all the loose bacteria.
When you follow these guidelines and change your toothbrush every three or so months, it will help keep your teeth clean and protected from plaque build up and cavities.
