Whitening and Invisalign

This week for National Smile month we will be talking about ways to get your best smile. That’s right we will be talking about whitening procedures and Invisalign. Whether you are whitening your teeth because of too many trips to your local coffee shop, looking to straighten your teeth, or fix a common dental problem that may be leading to other health issues we have all the information you need to decide what is best for your smile.

There are many whitening products out on the market today. There are over the counter products such as strips and kits that include trays and gel. There are also whitening services that your local dentist can either preform in the office or provide you with to use at home. Today we will be discussing those services and products.

First up, in office whitening. If you are looking for more instant results this is a great option. Custom whitening dental trays are made for each patient.  The procedure takes about two hours. It is completed in three twenty minute sessions.  While dramatic results can be visible immediately before and after pictures can also be used to show the dramatic change that happens over the course of the treatment.

Next up is clinician prescribed take home whiting trays. This allows patients to whiten their teeth in the privacy of their home. This treatment is different than over the counter options as dentists are able to prescribe a stronger whitening agent. The trays that you receive are also different. If you and your dentist decide this is the best option for you your clinician will take an impression of your teeth to make a custom fit tray. This allows for maximum contact between the whitening agent and your teeth unlike store bought trays. Your dentist will also walk you through how to use your trays and answer any questions you may have about the use of them. Results from this method of whitening can also be dramatic and noticed quickly.

A third option is internal bleaching. This is a bleaching process that is most commonly used after a root canal or a post is placed in a tooth. It is performed by placing a bleaching agent inside the damaged tooth where the pulp is supposed to reside. This treatment is only recommended if other processes do not work.

Another way to get your best smile is by the use of Invisalign. Whether it is purely cosmetic or needed for dental health reasons there are many benefits to using the Invisalign system over traditional braces. Invisalign can be used to correct gapped teeth, overbite, under bite, open bite, over crowded, and cross bite. New technology is always emerging and improving so consult your dentist to determine if you are a candidate. Invisalign’s benefits are numerous. It allows for near invisible teeth straightening. You are able to all foods as you can remove them whenever you want. You are also able to brush and floss your teeth as normal allowing for better dental health. Another advantage is the smooth design which means they are less likely to irritate your cheeks and gums.
